Van Nguyen, the Trade and Marketing Manager of MCC Vietnam and Cambodia. Is a leader who believes that success also depends on how you put in the work every day, no matter how small it is.
“If you have a career goal, work on it every single day.”
This is simple yet sound advice from Van Nguyen, the Trade and Marketing Manager of Team MCC Vietnam and Cambodia. She’s a leader who believes that success also depends on how you put in the work every day, no matter how small it is.
When we talk about “career growth”, we tend to think about huge goals that are so enormous that they can sometimes get overwhelming. We tend to forget that it is what we consistently do over a period of time that defines us as people, and as professionals. It is what gets us closer to our dreams.
Writer and motivational speaker Darren Hardy calls this “The Compound Effect” in his book with the same title. It shares the message that consistency is key to achieving remarkable success. Set a goal and work on it even through small, baby steps.
This is a kind of mindset that makes you value patience and hard work in your professional career; something that Van has kept with her when she started working with the Group ten years ago.
Patience and Hard work
Van started with Maersk as a Management Trainee. In her 10-year career in the Group, she held roles and projects not just in Vietnam but also in Malaysia and Singapore, taking on functions in various teams and business units like Damco, Maersk Line, Safmarine and now in MCC.
She attributes her success to her openness to learn new things and the strong teamwork with her colleagues. Van takes pride in working in MCC, in taking on new challenges while loving the supportive and collaborative culture.
Be Ready for Your Big Break
If there is a piece of advice that Van wants to share with every employee, it’s to be ready when opportunity comes knocking.
“I find myself lucky to have participated in different projects throughout the years, and to have contributed to successful changes that impacted the business,” Van muses. “There will always be opportunities for you. Just be prepared and plan your development.”
Though Van used the word “luck”, it is clear that her professional journey is more than that. She put in the hard work, learned from experience and most importantly, she was equipped when new challenges come.
As the saying goes, luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
